Gavia – Mortirolo

  Gavia – Mortirolo

There are 2 very demanding ascents. We are a short distance from the Stelvio National Park. You start at Bormio, heading in the direction of Tirano. Before the first tunnel, which is reserved for motor vehicles, turn right in the direction of “Le Prese” and follow the old road to Mazzo di Valtellina, synonymous with Mortirolo for cyclists. After the mythical pass (the “tempio del ciclismo”, or temple of cycling, as a road sign proudly states), you cycle down to Monno and turn left in the direction of Ponte di Legno, for a 20 km ride gently uphill, then follow the signs for Passo di Gavia, taking on the final difficult tract up to 2620 m. On the way to Gavia you have to cycle through a 200 m tunnel which is broad but not lit and in ascent, while the rest of the road is one lane only, as in the case of Mortirolo. From then on it is all downhill: you pass through S. Caterina Valfurva and return to Borno after 115 km and a difference in altitude of 3200 m.
