Campagnolo Rome Gran Fondo

granfondo-campagnoloOctober 13th 2013

This Gran Fondo is not just a traditional cycling competition, but also an occasion involving cycling enthusiasts in a whole range of sporting (and non-sporting) events and activities, beginning on October 13th and continuing for four days. Rome and its wonderful historical and artistic heritage provide the setting for the event, and if only for this reason the competition can claim to be unique of its kind.

There are two possible routes to follow: the first is a classic route of 95.4 km with a change in level of 1,218 metres, while the Gran Fondo itinerary covers 150 km, with a change in level of 2,250 metres. The starting point is the Coliseum, one of the most internationally popular tourist sites in Italy.

As usual, thousands of participants are expected to be involved in this cycling competition, which allows you to explore some of the most famous sights in the capital, starting with the Coliseum, the Imperial Forums and the Piazza Venezia. The route then takes you through Porta San Sebastiano and along the paved road of the ancient Appian Way. It then climbs up through the area of the Castelli Romani with its beautiful lakes, to reach the Rocca di Papa which affords a view of Rome from above. Finally, it reaches the Baths of Caracalla, where the tourist itinerary ends.

These two routes are special in terms of both landscape and historical interest, but also feature some demanding technical sections.

The aim of the Gran Fondo is not just to involve cycling enthusiasts in a sporting event, but also to introduce them to Rome and to all its cultural, historical and gastronomic attractions.

Gran Fondo of the Abruzzo

majella-2October 6th 2013

The first edition of the Abruzzo Gran Fondo offers an opportunity to explore a wonderful landscape. The two itineraries, the Medio Fondo and the Gran Fondo, both involve a spectacular section which passes through some very evocative places in the region. It also takes in two wonderful parks, the Majella and Coast of Trabocchi National Parks, among the most beautiful and special natural areas in Abruzzo.

The route begins at Lanciano, following a section of the Trabocchi coastline and then passing the D’Annunziano Hermitage to continue inland through the Majella National Park.

The Gran Fondo itinerary, covering about 130 km with a 2700-metre change in level, heads towards the Lanciano Pass, then proceeds downhill towards Guardiagrele to finish at Lanciano, crossing into the Majella Park. This is a very demanding route, taking cyclists from the coast up to an altitude of 900 metres in the hills.

The Medio Fondo itinerary skirts the heights of the Majella Park and once again finishes at Lanciano. This is also a very demanding route of approximately 85 km, with a 1350-metre change in level.

The two routes follow an identical route for one section, as far as the Piane d’Archi. At this point, the Media Fondo veers off to the left towards the village of Selva Piana, Ciommi, and on to Castel Frentano, then re-joining the Gran Fondo route to finish at Lanciano.

The Abruzzo Gran Fondo is certainly a cycling event which promotes the best of the local area, with its mixture of sea, mountains, culture and history.

In the context of Abruzzo cycle-tourism, this Gran Fondo competition is sure to prove one of the most important events in the region. The area offers a huge selection of itineraries through beautiful countryside, and you can profit from all the specialist services of our hotels for cyclists in AbruzzoCome on a cycling holiday in Abruzzo to enjoy an exciting journey of discovery!

forio-okSeptember 23rd 2013

September sees the return of the Forio D’Ischia team time trials, using a route which in May witnessed the arrival of the Giro di Italia. The third edition of the Forio D’Ischia time trials will largely follow the course of previous events, but this year will incorporate some important changes to make the competition even more enjoyable and exciting.

In addition to its great scenic attraction, this is a really demanding itinerary, covering about 20 kilometres over a 5-km circuit. This year, the competition will be linked to that special Italian event, the US ACLI time-trial.

La Magnifica Bianchi Gran Fondo

la-magnifica-2September 15th 2013

La Magnifica Bianchi Granfondo is a unique cycle-tourism event, and this year it is being staged in collaboration with the famous Bianchi brand, an international leader in the world of bicycles. The competition is special in that it includes routes which are technically very varied, ranging from metaled or unmade roads to country lanes, and because it makes use of alternative or unusual itineraries.  It also differs in that it finishes in a velodrome (at Forlì).

The event attracts many cycling enthusiasts, taking them right into the heart of the Romagna countryside to explore the history and beauty of some wonderful locations and landscapes. In the context of cycle-tourism in Emilia Romagna, the Magnifica occupies pride of place.

The competition involves two routes, starting from Piazza Saffi in Forlì. The 223-kilometre lungo fondo differs from last year’s itinerary in that the section from Montetiffi to Talamello will be run on a gravel road, to then re-join the metaled road to Perticara.

As far as San Marino, the route is the same as last year, arriving at the entrance gate to the Republic and then following the old route through Ponte Verucchio, Torriana, Borghi, and finally Forlì.

On the other hand, the 136-kilometre medio fondo starts with a level 30-km section along the Via Emilia, to then follow the same route as last year to the Monticelli junction. The first ascent will be Santa Maria Rio Petra. The itinerary mimics that of 2012 until the climb to the top of Montetiffi. At this point, after a descent of only about 300 metres, you reach the division between the long and short routes. This year, the ascent of Massamanente will follow a gravel rather than metaled road, leading to the top of the Grillo Pass.

September is the perfect month for a cycling holiday. You can choose your accommodation from among the many hotels for cyclists in Emilia Romagna and head off to explore a unique and very evocative landscape. The passion and expertise of real cycling enthusiasts has helped make our Emilia Romagna bike hotels among the very best in terms of the range and quality of services on offer to cyclists.

Giro del Veneto

giro-venetoAugust 31st 2013

This year’s edition of the Giro del Veneto will start and finish in Padua, with participants riding through the Euganean Hills. Last year, the Giro started from Abano and successfully promoted not only cycle-tourism in Veneto, but also the well-known spa centres of Abano and Montegrotto.

There are many delightful cycle itineraries in Veneto but this event has done much to highlight the Treviso area, especially sections such as those around Montello and the finishes in the Piave District of Treviso and Piazza Giorgione in Castelfranco.
