If you follow this route you can visit a number of impressive natural sights, such as the famous “Fonti” (Fountains) of San Leonardo, as well as several of the ancient conical dwellings known as “nuraghi”.
You leave from Ghilarza (290m) and cycle towards Santu Lussurgiu, passing through the small town of Abbasanta. The road goes gradually uphill for the first 10 km before turning into a steep ascent, which continues for about 5 km with a few bends but no special difficulty.
The village of Santu Lussurgiu is situated at about 550 m, and surrounded by the peaks of the Ferru Mountains. From this point, there are various routes you can follow: for example, you can go towards Cuglieri after passing through an area of hilly country around Badde Urbara and La Madonnina.
Another option is to go up towards San Leonardo di Siete Fuentes, a popular tourist attraction renowned for its fresh spring water. You leave Santu Lussurgiu at 543m and ride steeply uphill for 4 km to a height of 750m, and then descend to S. Leonardo (684 m). After another 15 km you arrive at Macomer, an important town in the Marghine-Planargia area and situated at about 550 metres above sea level.
The descent from Macomer takes you towards the S.S.131 (the Cagliari-Sassari road). You follow this road for a short way and then take a road to the left which leads to the small town of Borore (400m). You can by-pass Borore and continue on towards Aidomaggiore-Sedilo, a delightful village in a very attractive position. After leaving Aidomaggiore (250m), you go down to rejoin a section of the S.S. 131, crossing a viaduct over Lake Omodeo. A further 70 km on from here you arrive at Ghilarza.
All this area, from Borore to Sedilo, contains many examples of nuraghi, some of them in a good state of preservation.
